A Sad Goodbye
Dedicated to Kìon and Gringo - we miss you!
Kìon has passed away. He got into some of the poison they use to keep chickens etc. out of the fields after planting. While they often poison dogs they don`t like, I don`t think Kìon`s poisoning was intentional. I have to believe that to keep from becoming bitter towards all of Jocos. It happened while I was in Cajamarca the last time. Doña Paulina and Miriam did everything they could to save him - that I know for sure - but to no avail. I miss him a lot. I still think to call for him when I leave someplace, I thnk about him when I crack a hard boiled egg (he loved eggs) and when I go on what was our daily walk. People have bben pretty good - offering me puppies from their litters, but I won`t be getting another dog. Especially not out here. Its just too hard.
I think Doña Paulina is worried about me. She insists that I come over every afternoon to work on the sweather I`m finally knitting. Its actually really nice hanging out with the family. I espeically like going over while they are making lunch. The hustle and bustle of the kitchen is soothing - the rise and fall of family chatter, the fire crackly, the din of the radio. I`m actually hoping to move in with them once their new house is finished. Doña Paulina was so excited when I told her I wanted to move in with them! Her face just lit up! It was a great feeling - to have her so excited about me living with them.
Yes, you read that right. I`ve finally started a sweater! No more "Another scarf?", no more "Senorita Mery is almost done with hers.". Now its "Its too big" or "You`re not very far along. Whats taking so long". Sigh. There`s just no pleasing some people. Doña Paulina is great, as always, though. She`s so patient with me!
Summer is in full swing now - the vibrant colors from March are now baked to crispy versions of themselves. It never rains now and all the little streams that run through Jocos has dried up. Luckily, we haven`t had a problem with the water in the yards. The sun creates and interesting effect on the peaks surrounding Jocos. it reflects off the very edge of the peaks creating a faint border - a border that makes the peaks look like they have been superimposed on a bright blue background. If I didn`t have to hike them, I`d think they were fake!
We still don`t have electricty. I have no idea when it will finally be turned on. Until then, its candle lit dinners!
I much be getting a grip on this language finally. I had my first dream in Spanish the other night! It was great! I woke up feeling pretty smug. I haven`t had one since, but I`ll take whatever progress I can get!
